Community & Industry

Grades 1 & up

This STEAM-focused tour offers students a glimpse into how essential tasks were carried out at home and work from the 1800s to the early 1900s. The roles of technology, engineering and innovation during this period are emphasized.

In the iconic Red Mill, students will explore how simple machines were integral to daily operations. A visit to the Mulligan Quarry provides insight into how technological advancements improved working conditions, with a focus on the use of the rock crusher and screen house to harvest valuable limestone. In the forge, one of our blacksmiths will demonstrate how essential tools were crafted and maintained.

A stop at the one-room Bunker Hill Schoolhouse underscores the importance placed on education during a time when local families pooled resources to build schools and hire teachers for their children.

Colonial Life, Hands-On Experience

Grades 1 & up

This tour provides a rich educational experience by immersing students in daily life for children during the 1700s in rural New Jersey. Through hands-on workshops and tours of historic structures, it provides a well-rounded understanding of the daily challenges and local industries of that era.

The hands-on workshops rotate around our reproduction 1700s log cabin where students will learn the challenges of family life in a single room cabin as well as the significance of the herb garden and springhouse.

Students will be instructed in candle making, wool processing and woodworking basics. Each will bring home items that they make themselves including a hand-dipped candle and a Roving Sheep toy.

The workshops are rounded out with a visit to the iconic Red Mill, the blacksmith’s forge and the one-room Bunker Hill Schoolhouse. These visits highlight the importance of local industries in grinding local crops, making and repairing necessary tools as well as the role they played in creating vital community spaces.

The Colonial Life, Hands-On Experience Tour gives students an understanding and appreciation for the self-sufficiency of families in the colonial period.

Industrial Life, Hands-On Experience
Grades 1 and up

This tour provides a rich educational experience by immersing students in the changing world of industry and daily life in rural New Jersey between 1810 and 1910. Through hands-on workshops and tours of historic structures, students explore how waterpower, machinery and new technologies transformed local industries, the way people worked and the goods they produced.

The hands-on workshops introduce students to the tools, materials and processes that supported local industries. Students will learn about wool processing and the Red Mill's beginnings as a woolen mill, explore how simple machines made both large and small tasks easier and more efficient and experience early American education in our 1901 one-room Bunker Hill Schoolhouse.

Students will participate in three hands-on activities and bring home items they make themselves, including a Roving Sheep toy and a handmade hornbook.

The workshops are rounded out with visits to the iconic Red Mill, the Mulligan Quarry and its stone-crushing equipment, the limekilns and the blacksmith's forge. With the Mulligan Quarry as a focal point, students will discover how simple machines and mechanization allowed fewer workers to accomplish more, increasing both the quantity and consistency of materials produced. These visits highlight the transition from individual craftsmanship to increasingly mechanized industrial processes.

The Industrial Life, Hands-On Experience Tour gives students an understanding and appreciation of how the Industrial Revolution transformed local communities, industries and everyday life while highlighting the ingenuity and labor of the people who made these changes possible.

Length of tour: 3.5 hours including 30 minutes for bagged lunch (picnic tables provided)
